Gate 3 is where the physical metal is put to the test. After verifying the origin in Gate 1 and the paperwork in Gate 2, you must now verify the actual product.   • Step 2: Weight verification. Weigh every bar on a calibrated scale.
  • Step 3: Dimensional verification. Measure the length, width and height of each bar.
  • Step 4: Non-destructive testing. Use X-ray fluorescence to test the surface of the bar.
  • Step 5: Destructive testing. Drill or cut a sample from the centre of the bar for fire assay.
  • Step 6: Parallel assay. Send the sample to two independent assayers. Compare the results.

Red Flags Specific to Gate 3

  • Seller resists destructive testing. A genuine seller has nothing to hide.
  • Assayer chosen by the seller. If the seller insists on using a specific assayer you have not vetted, assume the assayer is compromised.
